Macedonian nationalism
Macedonian nationalism (, ), sometimes referred to as Macedonianism, is a general grouping of Nationalism, nationalist ideas and concepts among ethnic Macedonians (ethnic group), Macedonians that were first formed in the second half of the 19th century among separatists seeking the autonomy of the region of Macedonia (region), Macedonia from the Ottoman Empire. The idea evolved during the early 20th century alongside the first expressions of ethnic nationalism among the Slavs of Macedonia. The separate Macedonian nation gained recognition during World War II when the Socialist Republic of Macedonia was created as part of Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, Yugoslavia. Historiography in North Macedonia, Macedonian historiography has since established links between the ethnic Macedonians and various historical events and individual figures that occurred in and originated from Macedonia, which range from the Middle Ages up to the 20th century. Flag Of North Macedonia
The flag of North Macedonia (; ) depicts a stylized yellow sun on a red field, with eight broadening rays extending from the center to the edge of the field. It was created by Miroslav Grčev and was adopted on 5 October 1995. The eight-rayed sun derives from the national emblem and represents the "new sun of Liberty" referred to in "Denes nad Makedonija" ("Today over Macedonia"). The first post-Yugoslav flag of the country, adopted in 1992, known as the Kutlesh flag, featured the Vergina Sun, a symbol that had been discovered at Aegae, the first capital and burial ground of the ancient kings of Macedon. Greece imposed a year-long economic embargo in order to persuade the country to remove it from its flag, resulting in the current design.
